Emeritus Professor Saroj Jayasinghe

Saroj Jayasinghe is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Colombo and was one of the longest-serving consultant physicians at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He holds three doctorates: an MD in a clinical discipline and two by thesis from the Universities of Bristol and Colombo.

He was the founding head of the Department of Medical Humanities, the first such department in Sri Lanka, and continues to lead a global initiative to establish Sri Lanka as a hub for introducing humanities into health professional education.

In relation to the Sustainable Development Goals, he has been invited to the UN and the WHO to share his expertise. He pioneered the concept of Planetary Health in Sri Lanka by organizing the first symposium on the topic during the Colombo Medical Congress in 2020.

He has crossed disciplinary boundaries to address broader societal and environmental issues and was ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the Science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators by Stanford University, USA. He has over 170 peer-reviewed publications, and his current research interests include the role of meditation in diabetes, medical device development, decolonizing medical education, and systems thinking in health.
