Library Cinematic Space: A New Hub for Learning, Creativity and Cultural Engagement

The Library Cinematic Space (LCS) is a new academic and recreational facility established at the Library, University of Colombo, offering students and staff an opportunity to experience cinema in a relaxed, engaging, and educational environment.

Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, officially opened the LCS on 1st October 2026, in the presence of Deans of the Faculties and other distinguished members of the University community. The opening marked an important addition to the library’s range of services and its commitment to creating innovative spaces that support learning, creativity, cultural engagement, and student well-being.

The Library Cinematic Space has been designed to provide a welcoming environment where members of the University community can enjoy carefully selected films while exploring diverse cultures, ideas, perspectives, and forms of visual expression. Through regular film screenings, the LCS promotes cultural awareness, visual literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning beyond the traditional boundaries of the classroom.
