Farewell to Dr ( Mrs) D.C. Kuruppu, Deputy Librarian, University of Colombo

Deputy Librarian of the University of Colombo, Dr. D. C. Kuruppu, retired from service on 30th September 2025. She began her career in the library sector in 1991 by joining the University of Colombo Library as an Assistant Librarian. She was promoted to Senior Assistant Librarian Grade II in 1997 and to Senior Assistant Librarian Grade I in 2003. In 2007, she was appointed as the Deputy Librarian of the University of Colombo.

Dr Kuruppu earned her BSc. (Hons) Degree from the University of Ruhuna in 1985 and obtained her M. Phil Degree in Chemistry, focusing on Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, in 1993. Furthermore, she acquired her MSc degree in Information Management from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, in 1997. She was awarded her doctoral degree, focusing on the information needs of breast cancer patients, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, in 2017.

Dr. Kuruppu has rendered outstanding service to the University of Colombo Library for over 34 years in various roles. She began her career at the Faculty of Science Library, University of Colombo, and in 2001, she joined the Medical Faculty Library, dedicating herself to its improvement. Additionally, she served as Acting Librarian at the University of Colombo for more than 7 years during 2007-2008, 2011-2014, 2018-2019, and 2021-2024. Throughout her tenure, she initiated numerous innovative activities within the library. Her contributions extended beyond the university; Dr. Kuruppu has been the National Focal Point Librarian of the HELLIS Network since 2002, coordinating many national training programmes to educate health librarians and staff to strengthen health science libraries across Sri Lanka. She has also shared her expertise as a consultant on various national projects.

The University of Colombo Library appreciates Dr. D. C. Kuruppu’s 34 years of exceptional service and wishes her good health, happiness, and continued success in all her future endeavours.
